چکیده

We describe the design and implementation of lessons in undergraduate abstract algebra that integrate applications to teaching high school mathematics. Each lesson consists a pre-activity, class activity, homework set, assessment questions detailed instructor notes. The included intend bridge advanced mathematics concepts secondary content for prospective teachers, as well provide instructors with useful resource. includes four guiding features: addressing meaningful content; making connections teaching; emphasizing active learning; providing comprehensive notes instructors. Interviews their students document how adapted classrooms influenced undergraduates' mathematical understanding.

Teaching Computational Abstract Algebra

In the Spring semester of 1990 we undertook the educational experiment of teaching undergraduate mathematics and computer science students some fundamental notions of algebra by using computers. The course was entitled Computational Abstract Algebra and offered at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a cross-listed mathematics and computer science course. Twelve students enrolled in it, five of ...

Studio Teaching in an Undergraduate Course in Options and Futures

As indicated by Becker and Watts (2001), teaching in economics and finance is still mostly done in a Chalk and Talk passive learning environment. This paper reports on an active, hands-on approach implemented for business students enrolled in an undergraduate course in options and futures at HEC Montréal. The proposed environment adapts and extends the studio approach first developed for Introd...

Imaginative Deployment of Computer Algebra in the Undergraduate Mathematics Curriculum

Much of the author’s recent experience is attempting to teach Mathematics primarily to undergraduate students following degree programmes in Electronics or Audio Technology. Increasingly, it is found that although such students may be able to perform mechanistic steps such as obtaining a simple derivative, or evaluating a straightforward definite integral, they have little idea as to what these...

Use of Sysquake applications in an undergraduate control course

This paper describes how an undergraduate control course is enhanced with Sysquake interactive applications. Basic concepts in control theory, different ways to assess performance and robustness of a controlled system, and limits of closed-loop systems are illustrated with graphics which can be manipulated directly with the mouse, letting the student acquire a deeper and broader understanding o...
